Letter from the Chairman of the Board

There’s a slogan offered by one of the major credit card companies: “Membership has its privileges.” What a privilege it is, indeed, to serve as chairman of the board of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce in 2008. When I transitioned from hospital executive to entrepreneur, the first check I wrote as a business owner was to the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce. Now, as chairman of the board, I have the privilege of leading leaders, manifesting the mission of the Chamber which is “dedicated to the success of the business community through leadership, education and service.”

Membership doesn’t begin and end with writing a check for annual dues. Here are just a few ways to ensure you get the biggest return on investment from your Chamber membership:

· Participate. While you don’t have to come to every event, it’s important to be active in the Chamber in order to see an ROI. The best way to see and be seen is to join a committee and actively give of your time and talents.

· Communicate. We can’t serve our members if we don’t know what our members want. Let your voice be heard! Share your thoughts and ideas with me, with others on the board, with fellow members or with the Chamber staff and let us know how we can be of service to you.

· Advocate. Our group is designed to advocate on behalf of our members. Whether it’s supporting projects in our community that enhance opportunity or referring business to other members, Chamber membership involves promoting our community and each other.

This year, I’ve adopted the theme “Embracing the future while honoring the past.” As we go throughout the year, we’ll be acknowledging those who have contributed to the success of the Chamber while also identifying and grooming future leaders to take us to the next level.
